Reduce Shipment Damage for Frozen Products

September 19, 2023 by EGS Marketing

Shipping frozen products presents unique challenges. Ensuring that the products arrive in optimal condition requires careful planning, the right materials, and proper handling procedures. Here are some practical tips to help businesses reduce shipment damage:

  • Adopt Proper Packaging: Pack your foods in containers that can not only withstand the rigors of shipping, and also withstand the cold temperatures of the refrigerant you are using, dry ice or gel packs.
  • Use Insulated Shipping Containers: Frozen food requires insulation to maintain its temperature during transit. Opt for containers with extra-thick walls. An insulated liner can provide added protection against temperature fluctuations (WebstaurantStore).
  • Choose the Right Coolant: Dry ice is an excellent choice for frozen food as it maintains cold temperatures longer than cold packs. However, it’s essential to handle dry ice with care, using gloves and goggles. Ensure the food doesn’t directly touch the dry ice and label packages containing dry ice clearly.
  • Screen for Damaged items: Seal Food Properly: Before placing items in the shipping container, ensure they are sealed tightly in plastic bags or vacuum-sealed packages. This not only helps maintain freshness but also prevents potential leaks.
  • Pack Tightly: Pack the food tightly to prevent movement within the container. Movement can lead to temperature changes, potentially causing the food to defrost. Using packing peanuts or other padding can help keep items in place.
  • …but also Avoid Overpacking: While it’s essential to ensure products don’t move around, overpacking can lead to crushed or damaged items. Ensure there’s enough padding to protect the products without putting too much pressure on them.
  • Label Clearly: Clearly mark packages containing frozen items. Labels such as “Perishable – Keep Frozen” or “Contains Dry Ice” can inform handlers of the package’s contents and any special handling requirements.
  • Monitor Temperature: Consider using temperature monitoring devices within the shipment. These devices can provide insights into any temperature fluctuations during transit, helping businesses identify and address potential issues.
  • Regularly Review and Adjust: Continuously review your shipping practices. Gather feedback from recipients, and adjust your methods accordingly. This iterative process can help ensure optimal product quality upon arrival.

By following these tips, businesses can significantly reduce the risk of shipment damage, ensuring that their frozen products arrive in the best possible condition.

3PL vs 4PL: Which Is Right For You?

July 18, 2023 by EGS Marketing

In today’s complex and dynamic business landscape, companies often rely on logistics providers to efficiently manage their supply chains. 3PL (Third-Party Logistics) and 4PL (Fourth-Party Logistics) providers are two standard options. Understanding the differences between these models is crucial for making an informed decision that aligns with your business needs. Let’s explore the key characteristics of 3PL and 4PL and help you determine which option is right for you.

3PL: Outsourcing Operational Logistics

A 3PL provider is an external company that handles various logistics functions on behalf of a client. This model primarily focuses on operational tasks such as transportation, warehousing, and distribution. By partnering with a 3PL provider, businesses can benefit from cost savings from reduced labor costs, improved efficiency, and expertise in logistics operations. 3PL providers typically have established networks and resources to manage day-to-day logistics, allowing companies to focus on core competencies.

4PL: Integrating End-to-End Supply Chain Solutions

A 4PL provider takes logistics outsourcing to the next level by offering a comprehensive range of services that extend beyond operational logistics. As an integrator, a 4PL provider collaborates with multiple logistics service providers to design, manage, and optimize the entire supply chain. This includes strategic planning, vendor management, technology integration, and performance monitoring. The 4PL model aims to streamline the supply chain, enhance visibility, and drive overall efficiency.

Which Is Right for You?

Choosing between 3PL and 4PL depends on your business requirements and objectives. If you primarily seek assistance with specific logistics functions and want to offload operational tasks, a 3PL provider may be the ideal choice. On the other hand, if you require end-to-end supply chain management, strategic planning, and integration of multiple logistics partners, a 4PL provider can offer the necessary expertise and coordination.

The decision between 3PL and 4PL ultimately hinges on the complexity and scope of your supply chain needs. A 3PL provider is suitable for companies looking to outsource specific logistics operations, while a 4PL provider offers a more comprehensive approach to managing the entire supply chain. By carefully evaluating your business requirements and considering the level of support and integration needed, you can make an informed choice that drives efficiency, improves customer satisfaction, and supports your long-term growth.

Automation in Fulfillment

June 13, 2023 by EGS Marketing

In the fast-paced world of e-commerce, automation is revolutionizing the way businesses operate. One sector that has greatly benefited from automation is frozen fulfillment. With the rise in online grocery shopping and the demand for quick and efficient delivery, automated systems are transforming frozen fulfillment centers into highly efficient operations. In this blog, we will explore the impact of automation on the frozen fulfillment industry and the benefits it brings to businesses and consumers alike.

Streamlined Order Processing:

Automation in frozen fulfillment centers has streamlined the entire order processing cycle. From receiving orders to picking, packing, and shipping, automated systems ensure swift and accurate operations. Robotics and AI-powered technologies have made it possible to handle a large volume of orders with minimal human intervention. Automated conveyor systems, equipped with sensors and scanners, efficiently move frozen products throughout the fulfillment center, reducing the risk of errors and delays.

Enhanced Inventory Management:

One of the biggest challenges in frozen fulfillment is maintaining optimal inventory levels and ensuring product freshness. Automation has revolutionized inventory management by integrating real-time monitoring and data analytics. Smart systems can track inventory levels, expiration dates, and replenishment needs, ensuring that the right products are available at the right time. This not only reduces waste but also improves customer satisfaction by minimizing out-of-stock situations.

Improved Order Accuracy and Fulfillment Speed:

Automation has significantly enhanced order accuracy and fulfillment speed in ambient temperature fulfillment but unfortunately to a much lesser degree in frozen fulfillment due to the sub-zero environment. In frozen fulfillment, reliance on dedicated staff is crucial to the success of pick and pack operations, although automation can help tremendously with planning for efficiency and also for some accessory tasks such as erecting boxes, etc.

Automation has undoubtedly transformed frozen fulfillment operations, helping them meet the ever-increasing demand for speedy deliveries, ensuring customer satisfaction and loyalty. With streamlined order processing, enhanced inventory management, and improved order accuracy and fulfillment speed, automation has become the driving force behind efficient and reliable frozen fulfillment centers.

As the e-commerce industry continues to evolve, embracing automation will be crucial for businesses to stay competitive in the frozen fulfillment landscape. By harnessing the power of automation, businesses can not only increase their operational efficiency but also deliver exceptional customer experiences in the realm of frozen goods.

Why Warehouse Locations Matter to Your Business

June 2, 2023 by EGS Marketing

When it comes to shipping frozen foods, timing is vital. The journey from the production facility to the customer’s doorstep involves a delicate balance of logistics, timing, and temperature control. One of the key factors that determine the success of delivering frozen goods lies in the strategic placement of warehouses along the supply chain. In this blog post, we’ll explore why warehouse locations are vital for shipping frozen foods, with a specific focus on the critical requirement of delivering these products as soon as possible so the products do not perish.

Timely Delivery: The Three-Day Rule:

The “three-day rule” is a widely accepted guideline in the frozen food industry, stating that frozen products should be delivered to customers within three days of shipping. This rule is based on several factors, including the recommended shelf life of frozen foods and the need to maintain the cold chain. By adhering to this timeframe, companies ensure that customers receive their frozen goods while they are still in optimal condition and safe for consumption.

Reducing Transit Time:

The Three-Day Rule helps explain why strategic warehouse placement is instrumental in shipping frozen foods. When warehouses are strategically located closer to production facilities and distribution centers, the overall travel distance of the frozen goods is minimized. This reduction in transit time helps maintain the required low temperatures, ensuring the products remain frozen throughout the journey. By optimizing warehouse locations, companies can significantly improve the efficiency and speed of their frozen food delivery operations.

eGourmet is uniquely equipped to meet these requirements with 5 locations across the United States, ensuring all products are able to be delivered anywhere in the continental United States within 3 days. Our locations in Portland, Oregon and Fresno, California allow 2 day delivery anywhere on the west coast. Shipping Frozen Goods: What can go wrong?

May 8, 2023 by EGS Marketing

When shipping frozen food, there are several potential issues that can arise leading to unsatisfied customers. And no one wants that, right? So let’s walk through the freezer and see the most common problems that can occur when shipping frozen food and goods:

  1. Temperature fluctuations: Frozen food must be kept at a consistent temperature of -18°C (0°F) or below to remain safe for consumption. Any fluctuation in temperature during shipping can cause the food to thaw and refreeze, leading to quality and safety issues.
    1. Solution: ship with dry ice and make sure your 3PL partner is using the correct amounts based on time in transit, heat index and carrier shipping methods
  2. Inadequate insulation: Proper insulation is essential for maintaining a consistent temperature during shipping. Inadequate insulation can cause temperature fluctuations and spoilage, leading to wasted product and lost revenue.
    1. Solution: use a reliable insulation such as EPS or KTM Green cell or Temperpack ; Your 3PL should have testing data to provide substantiation for their insulation
  3. Incorrect food packaging: Choosing the wrong packaging can result in damaged goods, leaks, and spillage, etc.
    1. Solution: It behooves you to pack your product in packaging that can withstand the rigors of shipping. Carriers are notorious for tossing boxes. Also, remember that dry ice dissipates leaving a void in which product can be tumbled.
  4. Poor labeling: Proper shipping labeling is crucial to ensure that carriers handle the shipment appropriately and that your consumers react accordingly.
    1. Solutions: Labels should include the contents, weight, and packaging date, as well as “perishable” and “keep frozen” labels to alert carriers and consumers to the product’s sensitivity.  You also want a dry ice warning for your consumers.
  5. Delayed delivery: Any delay in shipping can cause the food to thaw and refreeze, leading to quality and safety issues.
    1. Solution: It’s crucial to work with reliable carriers who can ensure timely delivery of frozen goods.
  6. Regulatory compliance issues: Failing to comply with food safety regulations can result in fines, legal issues, and damage to the brand’s reputation.
    1. Solution:  It’s essential to stay up-to-date with food safety regulations and work with 3PL shippers and carriers who comply with these standards.

To avoid these pitfalls, do your research or hire an experienced and trustworthy 3PL to do it for you. Proper insulation, packaging, labeling, and temperature control are all critical factors to consider, along with working with reliable carriers.

eGourmet Solutions has a proven track record in frozen fulfillment: 15 years of experience, millions of packages shipped, long-term clients who stay with us because we are partners, not mere providers.
